COLUMBUS, Ohio – After an 11-day layoff, Ohio Dominican's baseball team returns to the diamond as the Panthers begin GLIAC play with a doubleheader against Lake Erie on Wednesday, starting at 2 p.m. from Panther Field.
ODU enters the week with a 4-10 record overall, while the Storm come into play with a 3-10 mark.
The Panthers have received strong contributions from their underclassmen to begin the campaign, both in the rotation and at the dish. On the mound, sophomore Alberto Canales (West Park, Fla.) has been sharp, allowing just seven hits and two earned runs in 12 innings, limiting opponents to a .163 batting average.
He's been backed up by classmate Daniel Mooney (Wauconda, Ill.), who has a 2-1 record and a GLIAC-best 22 punchouts in three starts, while fellow sophomore Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) has yet to allow an earned run in four outings.
ODU's top five hitters, meanwhile, are either sophomores or in their first year with the program. Sophomore Kevin Lydic (Dublin, Ohio) has hit in six straight ballgames and leads the team with a .469 average, which is the best in the GLIAC amongst those with more than 30 at bats, while Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) is hitting an even .400 in 13 starts. Junior college transfer Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) has a .366 average with a team-best five steals (third in GLIAC), sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) is hitting .313 and is second in the GLIAC with nine walks drawn and classmate Kyle Tisdale is batting .302 with three multi-RBI games thus far.
Jaskot and Lydic both have six multi-hit games, and freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio) – who had a seven game hitting streak earlier this year – leads the team with 13 RBI thus far, which is fifth-best in the GLIAC.
Upperclassmen have also had strong performances thus far as well. Senior Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) has a 2-1 record with a 3.18 ERA, and junior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) hasn't registered a win yet but has a matching 3.18 ERA in 11.1 innings. Senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) has 10 RBI, which is second on the team, and is batting .286.
The Panthers rank seventh in the GLIAC both with their .287 team batting average and 4.20 team ERA.
Lake Erie comes into play with a .277 team batting average, which is eighth in the league, and a 7.62 ERA, which is 12th. The offense has been led by Zach DeCamp, who paces the team in average (.358), homers (three) and RBI (11).
Last season, Lake Erie took the season series by winning three of four games. Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) hit a three-run homer in ODU's victory over the Storm last season, while two of the losses were by just two runs apiece.
