COLUMBUS, Ohio – After starting the GLIAC slate with a 4-1 record, Ohio Dominican's baseball team will try to keep its momentum moving forward as the Panthers play host to Saginaw Valley for three games this weekend.
The teams will play a single nine-inning game at 4 p.m. Friday, then square off for a twinbill beginning at noon on Saturday.
The Panthers enter the week with an 8-11 record overall after sweeping three games from visiting Tiffin last weekend. ODU finished the three-game set with a .356 batting average and .433 on-base percentage, outscoring the Dragons 27-18 for the weekend.
Junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) led ODU with a .600 batting average and seven RBI while also stealing two bases and scoring four runs. Freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio) had six hits in 12 at bats with four RBI, sophomore Kevin Lydic (Dublin, Ohio) had five hits in 10 at bats, and senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) had four extra base hits – including a walkoff home run in Sunday's 12-11 victory – along with five RBI for the weekend.
ODU received several solid performances on the mound, led by sophomore Cole Carpenter (Zanesville, Ohio), who threw a complete game four-hitter in ODU's 5-2 victory on Saturday. Junior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) was effective on Sunday, yielding two earned runs in 4.2 innings of relief, while sophomore Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings of relief while picking up a victory out of the pen.
Overall, Lydic ranks second in the GLIAC with his .447 batting average and Delgado is tied for seventh with his .386 clip. The Panthers have three of the top six run producers in the conference, with Parcher (17 RBI) ranking third and Delgado and Rovnak (16) in a tie for fourth.
Sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) is tied for fifth with his 16 runs scored and Delgado is second in the conference with nine stolen bases.
Senior Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) is one of five GLIAC hurlers with three wins on the campaign, while sophomore Daniel Mooney (Wauconda, Ill.) sits third in the conference with his 23 punchouts.
In the GLIAC, the Panther offense ranks fourth in batting average (.295) and fifth in slugging (.371) and third in runs scored (108). ODU's 23 stolen bases are also second. Meanwhile, the team ERA of 4.22 is fifth, and Panther pitchers have combined for 109 strikeouts, which is third in the conference.
Saginaw Valley enters the weekend with a 2-11 record overall and 0-3 mark in GLIAC play after suffering a three-game sweep at Ashland last weekend. The Cardinals are batting .245 as a team, led by Brad Schalk's .298 average, while Chris Perkovich leads SVSU with eight RBI.
On the mound, the Cardinals have a 5.28 staff ERA. Andrew Geese doesn't have a win but leads the team with a 1.29 ERA, 14.0 innings pitched and 18 strikeouts. Andrew Tidwell has yet to allow an earned run in 9.1 innings as well.
Ohio Dominican is 3-4 all-time against Saginaw Valley. The Panthers dropped three of four games in Saginaw last year, with two one-run losses and a two-run setback as well.
