#22 Baseball Powers Past Ohio Valley In Doubleheader Sweep

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's offense continued to click at a high level as the baseball team swept its G-MAC and home opener on Sunday, taking down Ohio Valley by scores of 19-1 and 7-4 in Panther Valley.

The Panthers, ranked No. 22 in the nation, racked up 30 hits and drew 10 walks in the two games while limiting the Fighting Scots (9-11, 0-4 G-MAC) to just 12 hits, all singles, in the doubleheader. ODU (13-4, 2-0 G-MAC) has now won five straight games and recorded 11 or more hits in all five of those games, outscoring its opponents 79-13 in the stretch.

Five Panthers had multi-hit efforts in the opener, with senior Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio) and junior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) each going 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Bland also knocked in three and stole two bases, while Paterniti had an RBI and a walk as well.

Sophomore Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk, and juniors Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) and Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) each drove in four. Junior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) also had two hits and two RBIs.

Komminsk hit a two-run homer to left in the second inning to get the scoring going, while Bland followed with an RBI double and later stole third and came in to score on a throwing error on the play to give ODU a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers then blew it open in the third, as Komminsk had an RBI double, followed by RBI singles by Sackett and Paterniti. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hull hit a ball into the left field corner that scored all three runs and made it 10-0 ODU.

ODU then scored five times in the fifth inning, including RBI singles by Bland, Machuga and Sackett, then tacked on three more runs in the sixth frame.

Sophomore Jonathan Conkle (Massillon, Ohio) closed the scoring with a majestic solo homer to right center to start the seventh inning, the first roundtripper of his career.

Junior Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio) was the recipient of that run support as he improved to 3-1 on the mound. He worked 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and one run while fanning seven.

In game two, ODU jumped out quickly again, but had to tack on some insurance runs late to pull away from Ohio Valley.

Down 1-0 in the first, junior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) and senior Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) went back-to-back with solo shots to left to put the Panthers on top. Machuga singled and Komminsk followed with a triple, and senior Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio) had an RBI single to put ODU in front 4-1.

Childers then launched another solo shot in the second inning to make it 5-1, but OVU crept back with a run in the third and two more in the fifth before freshman Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) ended their scoring threat with a fly out to Komminsk in right.

Up 5-4 in the sixth, Zeller set the side down in order in the top of the frame, including a pair of punchouts, and ODU scored twice in the bottom half. Bland had an RBI single and Hull followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4, and junior Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio) worked a perfect seventh to notch his second save of the season.

Banke finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Childers and Kaucher each went 2-for-3.

Ohio Dominican remains at home for a G-MAC doubleheader with Cedarville at 1 p.m. Monday in Panther Valley.
