COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican and Ashland will renew its football rivalry, but for the first time as non-conference opponents, when the Panthers and Eagles tangle at 7 p.m. Saturday night in Ashland.
Both teams are looking to bounce back from last minute road losses to top-10 PSAC teams. The Panthers had rallied from a 33-14 deficit at No. 8 California (Pa.) to take a 34-33 lead in the fourth, but the Vulcans hit a 25 yard field goal with 49 seconds left to escape with the win. Meanwhile, Ashland lost to No. 9 ranked Indiana (Pa.) on a 46 yard field goal as time expired.
Ashland holds a 4-3 advantage in the series. The scoring has been virtually dead even in the last six meetings, with only six total points separating the two teams (Ashland 161, ODU 155.)
With the setback at Cal, the Panthers have fallen in eight straight games to nationally ranked opponents, but five of those contests have been decided by a field goal or less. ODU had a 513-452 edge in total yardage, but was called for 10 penalties for 99 yards, while the Vulcans did not have a single penalty called against them.
Senior quarterback Grant Russell (Newark, Ohio) went 28-of-37 for 378 yards and two TDs while also rushing for a score. In his Panther debut, sophomore Cedric Washington (Knoxville, Tenn.) hauled in a pair of 52 yard scores and finished with 137 receiving yards, and sophomore David Turner (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had 101 yards and a 26 yard TD while also averaging 36.0 yards on kick returns. Junior Cory Contini (Dover, Ohio) pulled down nine passes for 97 yards as well.
Junior Ross Thompson (Delphos, Ohio) led the Panthers with 11 tackles (1.5 tackles for loss) and combined with senior Tre McIntyre (North Lewisburg, Ohio) on a sack. McIntyre and fellow senior Cameron Kohl (Hilliard, Ohio) each made eight tackles. In their Panther debuts, juniors Vincent Anderson (Riverside, Calif.) and Tyren Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) each had seven tackles, while junior Tristan Kehres (Shelby, Ohio) also made seven stops, a career high.
