WACO, Tex. – Ohio Dominican's football team picked up 105 points and is ranked No. 23 in the preseason AFCA Division II Coaches' Poll, released Monday morning.
This is the sixth straight year that ODU has been ranked or at least received votes in the preseason coaches' poll. The Panthers have a 58-20 record since 2011 (.744), winning a pair of conference titles and making two NCAA postseason appearances in that stretch.
ODU was projected to repeat as G-MAC champions this year after winning seven straight games to close last season. That's tied for the second-longest current win streak in the nation behind defending national champions Texas A&M-Commerce.
ODU is scheduled to return 15 of its 21 all-conference players from 2017, including seven first-teamers. A total of 47 letter winners return this year, including 16 players who started at least three games (seven on offense, nine on defense).
The first four opponents on the schedule are either ranked or receiving votes in the national poll. ODU opens at home against Cal (Pa.) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, and the Vulcans picked up 89 points, the most of any team outside of the top 25.
ODU takes on Ashland at home at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, and the Eagles are ranked No. 15 in the country. The Panthers follow that with another home night game, a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 15 against Hillsdale, who picked up three votes in the poll, then hit the road to take on No. 25 Findlay at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22.
