COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 30-8 Hillsdale run wiped out Ohio Dominican's first half lead as the men's basketball team fell 74-53 to the No. 23 Chargers Thursday night in a GLIAC South Division game at Alumni Hall.
The Chargers shot a crisp 50.9 percent from the field for the game (28-of-55), with 20 assists on those 28 baskets. Hillsdale hit 14-of-24 from the field (58.3 percent) in the first half and drilled 9-of-17 three-pointers overall (52.9 percent).
Senior forward Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) was the lone Panther in double figures with 15 points to go along with a team-high five rebounds. Senior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) had eight points as well.
ODU opened the game with a 9-4 spurt, fueled by four points from junior guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) and a triple by senior guard Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio). Hillsdale took control from that point, though, limiting the Panthers to just eight points in an 11:05 stretch and building a 34-17 lead with 5:01 to play. ODU was able to trim the deficit at the break to 39-29 as senior guard Kip Kelley (Raleigh, N.C.) came up with a steal and Gibbs finished with a lay-in at the buzzer.
The Panthers (3-19, 0-16 GLIAC) then cut the deficit to single digits on a pair of occasions early in the second half, but the Chargers (19-3, 13-2 GLIAC) pulled away in the second half and would lead by as many as 23 points in the frame.
ODU shot 35.2 percent for the game (19-of-57) against the GLIAC's top defense and was out-rebounded 39-26.
Ohio Dominican returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday against Findlay in Alumni Hall. Saturday is ODU's Pink Wave Day, as the athletic department will collect donations to benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund and the Bellman family, and it is also the annual Academic Excellence Day and Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. All student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher in the fall semester will be recognized at halftime of the women's game, which tips at 1 p.m.
