COLUMBUS, Ohio – A spirited second half effort wasn't enough for Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team as the Panthers succumbed to visiting Findlay 80-61 in GLIAC South Division play Saturday.
Trailing by 25 at halftime, ODU cut its deficit to 11 on a pair of occasions, including 68-57 with just under six minutes to play, but did not make a field goal after that point.
Four Panthers scored in double figures, led by 14 points from senior forward Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) and six rebounds. Senior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) chipped in with 12 points and a game-best nine rebounds and is now just six points from reaching 1,000 for his career. Senior center Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) and senior guard Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio) both chimed in with 11 to also pace the Panthers.
ODU trailed 12-8 early after a Mochoskay layin, but the Oilers ripped off 11 straight points as part of a 22-5 spurt to grab a 34-13 lead with 7:10 to play in the first half. The lead stretched to 25 at intermission as Findlay hit 17-of-32 shots from the field (53.1 percent) while limiting the Panthers to 34.6 percent shooting (9-of-26) and forcing 10 ODU turnovers.
The Panthers started the second half with energy, though, as a 14-5 run trimmed the deficit to 54-38 at the 15:35 mark. Buckets by Gibbs at the 7:13 and 5:54 marks brought the Panthers to within 11, but Ohio Dominican missed its final five shots from the field and managed just four free throws to close out the scoring.
With the setback, ODU dropped to 3-20 (0-17 GLIAC), while the Oilers moved to 17-6 (11-5 GLIAC). The Panthers hit the road Thursday for an 8 p.m. tip-off against Hillsdale.
