CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team was defeated in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Quarterfinal contest at Cedarville by a final score of 81-77 Tuesday night in the Callan Athletic Center.
Leading the way for the Panthers was junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) who recorded his second straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) played just 12 minutes but scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Michael Scott (Hebron, Kentucky), Matt King (Mason, Ohio) and Tahj Curry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) all had 11 points on the evening.
In the first half ODU shot just 39% from the floor and had nine turnovers but only trailed 32-27 at the half as they forced eight turnovers themselves.
Cedarville took a 22-13 lead 10 minutes into the contest but eight points from King helped the Panthers cut the deficit to three at 30-27 with 2:29 remaining where the teams would head to the locker room.
ODU came out of the locker room in the second half making seven of their first eight shots from the floor as the Panthers took their first lead of the second half at 45-43 on a Scott layup.
Hickey made his third three of the second half with 10:52 remaining to give ODU their last lead at 51-50 but a 14-4 Cedarville run gave the Jackets the lead they would not give up.
The Jackets would take their largest second half lead of 11 at 69-58 and 72-61 before the Panthers ended the game with three consecutive threes to cut their deficit to three with one second left.
ODU shot 48% (30-for-62) from the floor and 39% (11-for-28) from three while Cedarville was 51% (30-for-59) from the floor and 62% (8-for-13) from three.
The Panthers finish their season at 17-11 while Cedarville advances at 18-11 to the G-MAC semifinal.
