CEDARVILLE, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team scored two goals in the final 19 minutes of a comeback attempt that fell just short in a 3-2 defeat to Cedarville at the Yellow Jacket Soccer Complex at Cedarville University on Thursday evening in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match.
Junior Jonathan Barnes (Winter Haven, Florida) scored two goals in the match and now boasts three goals on the season. Sophomore Noah Kiser (Mason, Ohio), freshman Alec Holden (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) recorded one assist each in the match. Freshman keeper Ian Crook (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded four saves for ODU in 66 minutes of action.
ODU trailed 3-0 in the second half but the Panthers pressed Cedarville in the final 19 minutes of the match. Kiser was fouled in the box in the 71st minute and his subsequent penalty kick was saved, but Barnes entered the box with speed, putting a ball to the back of the net from the close left wing, cutting the ODU deficit to 3-1.
In the 89th minute, Holden passed the ball ahead to Szabo, who flicked it ahead to Barnes on a breakaway. Barnes did the rest, finding the back of the net for the second time on the night and cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 3-2.
But time ran out on ODU's comeback attempt, as the Panthers fell by a final score of 3-2.
Ohio Dominican will look ahead to its contest at Ohio Valley on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in a Great Midwest matchup.
