INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team is projected to finish seventh in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Coaches Poll presented by Under Armour, the conference announced Thursday.
The Panthers accrued 61 points in the preseason rankings. Defending champion Ohio Valley was projected to repeat as they garnered the top spot with 119 points and 10 of 12 first place votes. Davis & Elkins (102), Tiffin (90), Alderson Broaddus (87) and Findlay (86) round out the top five. Also ahead of the Panthers is Cedarville (81) while Trevecca Nazarene (56), Walsh (45), Lake Erie (34), Malone (19) and Kentucky Wesleyan (13) are all projected to finish behind the Panthers.
Ohio Dominican brings back 17 players from a team that went 8-9 overall and 7-7 in the conference. The Panthers also brought in 14 freshman to the squad.
The men's soccer team will be led by seniors Ryan Kasprzak (Hilliard, Ohio) and Jonathan Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla.). Kasprzak and Barnes come back to lead the offense as they tied for the team lead with eight goals apiece a year ago. They were also first and second on the team with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Another key returner for the offense is sophomore Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) who played in all 17 games a year ago where he had 10 points on four goals and two assists.
Leading the defense for the Panthers will be senior goalkeeper Robby Frye (Cincinnati, Ohio) who is coming off an injury from a year ago. Also returning to help lead the defense is junior Demarco Andrews (Kingston, Jamaica) who helped the defense record four shutouts from a year ago.
The Panthers open their season with the Battle for the I-70 Cup at Urbana on Thursday, August 30 before their home opener on Saturday, September 1 at 12:00 p.m. against Indianapolis. The Panthers open conference play with a home matchup against Malone on Thursday, September 6 at 5 p.m.
