URBANA, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team was defeated 2-1 in their season-opening matchup with Urbana for the I-70 cup in a nonconference matchup Thursday afternoon at Urbana University Stadium.
This marks the third consecutive year the Battle for the I-70 Cup was decided by one goal.
Each team matched each other on the stat sheet in the first half as each team had one assist with six shots, four of which on goal. However, Urbana found the back of the net twice in the opening 45 minutes with goals in the third minute and the 30 minute by Jasminko Dizdarevic to gain a 2-0 lead. The Blue Knights accrued 12 fouls and three yellow cards in the first half while the Panthers had just four fouls.
The Panthers answered the Blue Knights physical play with a goal of their own when freshman Zach Ziolo (Dublin, Ohio) scored the first goal of his career in the 38 minute on an assist from fellow freshman Carter Patchett (Dublin, Ohio) to narrow the deficit to 2-1.
In a slower paced second half, neither team could find the back of the net. Shots by Ryan Kasprzak (Hilliard, Ohio), Tyler Arnold (Westerville, Ohio), and Cameron Christian (Pataskala, Ohio) all found the arms of Urbana goalie, Jakob Henriksen. The Panthers added six more shots with four more on goal while the Knights added five shots with no more on goal. Ohio Dominican ended the afternoon with seven fouls while Urbana accrued 20 total fouls.
Kasprzak recorded four shots on the afternoon with three on goal while Ziola and Austin Blair (Cincinnati, Ohio) each recorded two shots.
The Panthers have their 2018 home-opener on Saturday, September 1 at 12 p.m. against the University of Indianapolis.
