Softball Earns Sweep Over the Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team swept a pair of games from the Lake Erie Storm Tuesday evening by the score of 5-1 and 10-2.

The Panthers improved their record to 20-24-4 (15-7 GLIAC) while the Storm fell to 2-30 (0-22).

Ohio Dominican plated two runs in the top of the first inning in game one when sophomore Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) hit a two-out single through the left side. Sophomore Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) belted her second triple of the season to right center, scoring Cribari. Sophomore Devan Audette (Bronson, Mich.) batted in the second run, singling through the left side of the infield, scoring Thomas.

The Panthers extended their lead 3-0 in the second when sophomore Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) hit a two-out dinger, her first of the season.

The Storm scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth after Meredith Scholle doubled, scoring Courtney Hawk.

In the seventh inning, ODU had two more runs cross the plate after freshman Elisabeth Weber (Canton, Ohio) singled down the right field line, scoring Cribari and Thomas.

Sophomore Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) picked up her 13th win of the season, while going the distance, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts.

The Panthers scored 10 runs on 10 hits in the second game to defeat the Storm 10-2 in five innings.

The Storm took the early 2-0 lead on a Mackenzie Quinn two-run homer.  After that, it was all ODU.

Things got started for the Panthers when senior Brooke McCartney (Salem, Ohio) and Cribari reaching on infield errors,putting  Panthers on first and second. Thomas scored McCartney after a single and Cribari motored her way to third. Sophomore Taylor Mason (Belpre, Ohio) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Cribari and advance Thomas. Weber hit in the third run of the inning with a single to left field, giving the Panthers the 3-2 lead.

The following inning, McCartney hit a one-out RBI double, which scored Seeds and extended the Panthers lead to 4-2. Later in the inning, Mason drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, allowing McCartney to cross home plate for the 5-2 lead.

The Panthers continued to pad their lead by scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings respectively. Junior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) and Seeds each knocked home an RBI in the third, while the fourth saw an unearned run and Seeds drive home freshman Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio)

Weber batted in the 10th and decisive run for the Panthers in the fifth after doubling to left field.

Sophomore Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) earned her seventh win of the season in game two. Fishel allowed just two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Ohio Dominican concludes its regular season this weekend with doubleheaders at Ashland on Friday, April 26 and Malone and Saturday, April 27.
