COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a slow start at the plate, the Ohio Dominican softball team's bats caught fire and the Panthers managed to split a doubleheader with visiting Ashland on Friday afternoon at Panther Field. The Eagles took game one 7-5 in eight innings and the Panthers won game two 8-2.

Overall, ODU is now 23-25 and 19-6 in the GLIAC.

In game one, Ashland jumped to an early 3-0 lead, and extended that lead to 5-0 the following inning. Kayla Prokopakis and Jen Moore highlighted the scoring with homeruns to center field.

The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) drew a walk and scored when freshman Allie Hinton's (Newcomerstown, Ohio) singled to left field.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Panther bats came up big. ODU tied the game 5-5 after capitalizing on two Ashland errors that allowed the Panthers to score four runs. Sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio) hit her third homerun of the season after connecting on a payoff pitch. Sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) followed with a single to right field, and advanced to third when senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) reached on an error. Thomas doubled to right center, scoring Fishel and Jividen. Sophomore Julia Suyak (Trenton, Mich.) scored the Panther tying run, which was unearned thanks to an error by the Eagles.

Neither team could seal the deal in the sixth or seventh innings, forcing the game to go into extra innings. The Eagles scored two runs in the eighth to seal the Panthers fate.

In the nightcap, ODU wasted no time is getting the offense rolling as the Panthers put up six runs in the first inning. Fishel, Jividen, and Thomas all singled to the left side of the field to load the bases with no outs. Hinton grounded out to the short stop, which advanced Jividen and Thomas and scored Fishel. Sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) singled to left, scoring Jividen and junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) hit a single to center field to score Jividen. Junior Alex Cribari's (Lyndhurst, Ohio) single to right score Albanese and advanced Seeds to third. After a stolen base by Cribari, Weber hit a two-RBI single through the right side.

Ashland scored two runs in the first to cut the lead to 6-2.

In the fourth, the Panthers added their final run thanks to a double by Thomas.

Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) picked up the win for the Panthers, her 17th of the season.
