INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Ohio Dominican softball team is headed to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time since joining the Division II ranks in 2010. The Panthers are the fifth seed in the Midwest Region and will play Truman State (Mo.) in St. Louis. The tournament runs Friday-Sunday, May 9-11. The NCAA made the announcement this morning.
ODU will play Truman State, the region's first seed, in the first round. The other game to be played in St. Louis has the host, first-seeded Mo. – St. Louis meeting eight seed Bellarmine.
The other side of the Midwest bracket has second-seed Wayne State (Mich.) host seventh seed Ashland. Indianapolis is the third seed and will play sixth seed Grand Valley. Those games will be held at Wayne State.
Both of this weekend's tournaments are double elimination. The winners from these sub-regionals will clash the following week in a best two-out-of-three series.
Ohio Dominican is coming off one of its most successful seasons having captured a GLIAC regular season title and having seven Panthers named to the All-GLIAC teams. Junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) was named Player of the Year while Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) was named Freshman of the Year. Head Coach Marcella Vanlandingham was named Coach of the Year.
The Panthers are 29-26 and Truman State is 40-11. ODU lost to Wayne State in the GLIAC Championship game last weekend where the Panthers battled through the consolation bracket. ODU is 1-4 against Truman State. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. EST.
