Softball Signs Six Student-Athletes For 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Six student-athletes will be joining Ohio Dominican's softball team for the 2018 season as part of its 2017 recruiting class.

Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio), Emma Bergman (Oak Harbor, Ohio), Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana), Cori Ladanyi (Ludlow, Kentucky), Raemon Meents (Downers Grove, Illinois) and Layne Stinnett (Edwardsburg, Michigan) will be joining the program for the 2018 season.

"Very strong academically and are perfect fits for our program," Head Coach Marcella Vanlandingham said of the class. "They each have bright futures ahead of them at the college level.  I am looking forward to the strengths they will bring to our team. They add much needed depth and versatility to our roster. Most of them can play multiple positions. With this group, we added some very strong hitters to our roster. They are great competitors and I am excited to watch their games develop at the next level."

 

Kristen Bales | 5-6 | OF | Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central

High School: Recorded a .338 batting average in her junior season at Pickerington Central, going 23-for-68 with 18 singles, 4 doubles, 1 triple, while finishing with 11 RBIs and 19 runs…Boasted an on base percentage of .375 with two stolen bases, also recording a .923 fielding percentage in her junior year…Also plays soccer and basketball at Pickerington Central…Favorite high school memory thus far has been winning the Ohio Capital Conference championship.

Personal: Daughter of Peggy Bales…Enjoys spending time with family and friends…Picked Ohio Dominican because of the "small classes, one-on-one time with the professors and great softball team."

Emma Bergman | 5-4 | OF/U | Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor

High School: Earned First Team All-District and First Team All-Conference honors at Oak Harbor in 2016…Three-Time All-Conference scholar-athlete…Earned the 2014 Oak Harbor Rocket Pride Award for Sportsmanship and Integrity…Recorded a batting average of .412 with 40 hits and an on base percentage of .462 in 2016…Also plays basketball and volleyball at Oak Harbor…Favorite high school memories are winning a sectional championship in 12 innings and going 18-3 in her junior season.

Personal: Daughter of Cathy and George Bergman…Has three siblings, Zach, Nick, and Alex (wrestles at the United States Naval Academy)…Related to former professional women's tennis player, Chris Everett…Enjoys baking, hanging out with friends and volunteering for community service…Picked Ohio Dominican because of the "great softball program, beautiful campus, small class sizes, and proximity to my brothers."

Carson Hackerd | 5-5 | OF/1B | Frankfort, Indiana/Frankfort

High School: Three-year First Team All-Sagamore Conference performer at Frankfort High School…Also earned first team all-area and first time all-county honors in each of her three years at Frankfort...Recognized with scholar-athlete status and earned the team's 2016 softball scholastic award…Named team's defensive player of the year in 2016 and offensive player of the year in 2014 and 2015…Also plays volleyball and has earned seven varsity letters in softball and volleyball thus far…Serves on the IHSAA Leadership Advisory Committee…Holds a career batting average of .521 through three seasons…Favorite high school memory so far is making it to the sectional tournament for the first time in school history.

Personal: Daughter of Bill and Robin Hackerd…Has one sibling, Taylor (sister)…Enjoys spending time with her family, friends, working with special needs kids and volunteering at the Humane Society…Picked Ohio Dominican because "ODU can provide me the best of both worlds in academics and softball. I look forward to working with the coaches and players and contributing to the continued success of the softball program."

Cori Ladanyi | 5-7 | 2B, OF | Ludlow, Kentucky/Notre Dame Academy

High School: Named the 2014 NKSCA Division 3 Player of The Year and 2014 NKAC D3 Most Outstanding Player…Nine-year honor roll student…High School varsity starter since seventh grade…Earned Social Studies Academic Award from 2010-2014…Hit & Run regional competitor and 2014 game MVP...Favorite memory so far is winning the regional championship in 2015.

Personal: Daughter of Brad and Heather Ladanyi…Has one sibling, Miranda, who plays softball at Spalding University…Hobbies include cooking, baking, crocheting, hanging out with family and playing with her dog… Picked ODU because of proximity to hometown, beautiful campus and area, good academics and the friendly atmosphere.

Raemon Meents | 5-6 | C/OF | Downers Grove, Illinois/Downers Grove North

High School: Member of the National Honors Society…Downer's Grove North High School Editor-In-Chief of yearbook…Serves as a peer leader…Batted .315 a season ago for the Trojans…Also plays volleyball.

Personal: Daughter of Alison Topa and Eric Topa…Has three siblings, Skye Meents, Evan Topa and Quinn Topa…Picked Ohio Dominican because "it's a great school and a great fit for me. I love the small class sizes."

Layne Stinnett | 5-4 | 3B/C | Edwardsburg, Michigan/Edwardsburg

High School: Has earned scholar athlete, all-conference, all-district, all-regional and all-state honors in her time at Edwardsburg High School…Holds the single season and career home run record at Edwardsburg, breaking the career home run record twice thus far…Batted .491 with a slugging percentage of .955 while recording 58 RBIs in her junior season…Favorite high school memories are placing in the top 13 at ASA nationals out of 189 teams and breaking the high school home run record in her freshman and junior years…Also played basketball and volleyball at Edwardsburg.

Personal: Daughter of Frank and Lisa Stinnett…Has one sibling, Karsyne Stinnett…Enjoys hunting with her dad and sister, re-doing trucks with her dad and hanging out with friends…Picked ODU because "ODU offered the program I was interested in. The science department was impressive and the campus was very inviting. The softball program is competitive and in talking with the coaches, I liked the goals they have for the program."
