EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Four runs in the top of the sixth inning helped Ohio Dominican's softball team earn a 4-1 win over Truman on Saturday following an 8-1 loss to Southern Indiana on day two of the Midwest Region Crossover.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth against Truman, junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) reached first to lead off the inning after an error by the first baseman. In the next at bat, sophomore pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) singled to right center, advancing Kline to third. Then senior Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to score Kline and start the scoring for the Panthers, tying the game at 1-1.
With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) reached first on a fielder's choice and Wallace scored following an error by the catcher to take a 2-1 lead for ODU.
But senior Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) would give ODU extra run support in the next at bat, singling to left center field to score Simmonds and sophomore Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) and give the Panthers a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Lamping would retire all six batters she faced in the final two innings, pitching all seven innings in the circle for the Panthers and allowing just one run on five hits to help Ohio Dominican (4-6, 0-0 GLIAC) earn a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs.
ODU fell 8-1 to Southern Indiana in its first contest on Saturday. The Panthers recorded five hits in the contest, including two from Murdoch, who went 2-for-3 with one double while pitching 3.1 innings and allowing just one hit. Kline finished with an RBI single, while Wallace and freshman Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) each recorded one hit for the Panthers.
Ohio Dominican will conclude play tomorrow in the Midwest Region Crossover, facing Drury at 11 a.m. EST/10 a.m. CST and Bellarmine at 1 p.m. EST/12 p.m. CST.
