Softball Takes Two On First Day Of NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. — Ohio Dominican's softball team defeated Kutztown by a final score of 6-3 and earned a 5-2 win over Seton Hill on the first day of competition for the squad at the NTC Spring Games on Sunday.

ODU (8-8, 0-0 GLIAC) has won three-straight games and is 5-2 in its last seven contests.

Against Kutztown, the Panthers used three first inning runs to key a 6-3 victory over the Golden Bears. Ohio Dominican scored six runs on 11 hits and limited Kutztown to three runs, all in the bottom of the sixth.

Leading the way for ODU was senior Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) and junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio). Wallace went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Kline also finished 3-for-4, recording a triple. Junior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) finished 2-for-2, while freshman Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) and Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) recorded one hit each for ODU. Sophomore Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) earned her fourth win of the season, pitching all seven innings and allowing just three runs on eight hits.

Kline began the contest with a lead-off triple for Ohio Dominican, and the Panthers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as a single to left field in the next at bat by Wallace scored Kline and gave ODU a 1-0 lead.

Later in the inning, sophomore Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) reached on an error by the second baseman that scored Wallace, increasing the Panther advantage to 2-0. Then two batters later with runners on first and second, Farmer singled to score Mix and Ohio Dominican took a 3-0 lead through one.

Leading 4-0 in the top of the sixth, ODU added two more runs after a single to center field by Wallace scored Kline and Slider to increase the Panther advantage to 6-0. Kutztown scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth but could not cut further into the deficit, as ODU earned the win, 6-3.

In game two, Ohio Dominican scored five runs in the second inning en route to a 5-2 win over Seton Hill. The Panthers recorded six hits in the contest and held the Griffins to just two runs on seven hits.

Wallace went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mix also went 2-for-3 in the contest. Slider and junior Jordan Nichols (Peotone, Illinois) each recorded one hit. Senior pitcher Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) went all seven innings in the circle, allowing just two runs on seven hits for Ohio Dominican.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded, sophomore Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Nichols to score and tie the game at 1-1. Then in the next at bat, Sutter reached on a fielder's choice to score Mix and give ODU a 2-1 lead.

With two outs, Wallace singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw to score Simmonds, Slider and Sutter to increase Ohio Dominican's advantage to 5-1. Murdoch surrendered just one run for the remainder of the game, and ODU earned its second-straight victory, 5-2.

The Panthers continue play in the NTC Spring Games on Monday with a contest against Illinois-Springfield at 10:30 a.m., followed by a game with Bemidji State at 1 p.m.
