COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's softball team defeated Ferris State by a final score of 10-3 on Saturday at Panther Field in game two of a GLIAC doubleheader against the Bulldogs and fell 4-2 in game one.
Ferris State notched a 4-2 victory in the first game, but following a sweep of Grand Valley State on Friday, Ohio Dominican (16-14, 3-1 GLIAC) begins GLIAC play with a 3-1 mark.
In game two on Saturday, ODU tied a season-high with 10 runs and recorded a season-high 15 hits in the contest. Seniors Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) and Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) each went 3-for-4. Freshman Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) finished 2-for-4, while sophomore Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) notched two RBIs for the Panthers.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third with two outs, Wallace singled down the left field line to score Farmer and tie the game 1-1. Then in the next at bat, Murdoch doubled to right center, scoring Wallace and junior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) to give ODU a 3-1 lead that it never surrendered.
Leading 6-3 in the top of the seventh, Simmonds successfully bunted for a single to score junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) and increase the Panther advantage to 7-3. Then in the next at bat, junior Jordan Nichols (Peotone, Illinois) doubled to left field to score Simmonds and Wallace, adding run support for the Panthers and increasing the lead to 9-3. A single by Mix later in the inning and a fielding error by the center fielder allowed Nichols to score, giving ODU a 10-3 lead. Murdoch held the Ferris State offense in check in the bottom of the seventh to give the Panthers the win, 10-3.
In game one, Ohio Dominican fell to Ferris State by a final score of 4-2. ODU recorded 12 hits compared to just five for the Bulldogs. Kline, Wallace, Simmonds and Farmer each went 2-for-4 for the Panthers. Sophomore pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) allowed just two earned runs in seven innings pitched.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the second, Lamping homered to left field, recording her first homer of the year to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. But Ferris State would score two runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the sixth to earn the 4-2 win.
Ohio Dominican will travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday before returning home to Panther Field next weekend for GLIAC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday against Saginaw Valley and Northwood.
