TIFFIN, Ohio – Resuming a game halted by darkness eight days ago, Ohio Dominican's softball team needed little time Friday afternoon to knock off Tiffin 7-5 in GLIAC play.
The game was started in Columbus on Thursday, April 13 but was halted with the score tied 5-5 after seven innings. On its way to Michigan for weekend series against Wayne State and Hillsdale, the softball team stopped in Tiffin and needed less than 15 minutes to secure the victory.
Junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) singled to start the eighth inning and stole second base. Classmate Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) followed with an RBI single, then later came in to score on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio).
Freshman Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and set the Dragons down in order, with a groundout and two strikeouts, to close out the victory.
When the game started in Panther Valley last Thursday, ODU had trailed 2-0 early, rallied to take a 5-2 lead. A bunt single by Sutter scored Kline in the third inning, and in the fifth inning, Mix hit an RBI single to right center that plated Sutter and tied the score.
ODU (24-18, 11-5 GLIAC) then scored three times in the sixth to grab the lead. A two-out, two-run single off the bat of senior Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) made it 4-2, and a Dragon error allowed senior Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisc.) to come in to make it 5-2.
Tiffin came back to tie it, though, scoring once in the sixth and drawing even with a two-run homer in the seventh.
The Panthers finished with 14 hits. Mix went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, and Kline and Sutter each had a pair of hits. Murdoch also chipped in with two hits and threw 6.0 innings of relief.
Ohio Dominican will take on Wayne State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
