FINDLAY, Ohio — Ashland scored a run in the top of the 11th inning that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 (11 innings) win over Ohio Dominican's softball team in a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal at Iriti Field at the Marathon Diamonds on Saturday afternoon.
ODU recorded seven hits on the day but could not muster a run for the contest. Sophomore pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) allowed just one earned run on six hits while also recording one hit offensively. Senior Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) finished 2-for-4, junior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) went 2-for-5 and junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) recorded a hit and stolen base. Sophomore Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) finished 1-for-2 and drew three walks, while freshman Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) also recorded a hit for the Panthers.
Ashland loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs, but Lamping and the Panther defense dug deep to escape the inning unscathed. Lamping recorded a strikeout to earn the first out of the inning, then forced a popup to Kline and lineout back to Lamping ended the inning and allowed the Panthers to keep the contest tied at 0-0.
Ashland scored in the top of the 11th on a double to break the stalemate and take a 1-0 lead, but Murdoch would lead off the bottom of the 11th with a single for Ohio Dominican. A passed ball allowed Murdoch to advance to second, and Mix drew her third walk of the contest to give the Panthers two runners on base with no outs. ODU would load the bases, but a strikeout and then a well-executed double play ended the contest and earned the victory for the Eagles, 1-0.
Ohio Dominican finished fourth in its final season in the GLIAC and ends the 2017 season with a mark of 27-22 (14-8 GLIAC). Seniors Wallace and Murdoch, who combined for 306 appearances in their Panther careers, were named to the All-GLIAC first and second teams respectively on Saturday. ODU will look forward to play in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) in the 2018 season.
