NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's softball team picked up its first two Great Midwest Athletic Conference wins in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon at Walsh, topping the Cavaliers by final marks of 12-3 and 14-0 (5 innings) in a conference doubleheader.
The Panthers (12-15, 2-2 G-MAC) scored 26 runs on 16 hits for the day, and their 14-run win over Walsh in game two is the largest margin of victory in a contest for ODU since a 20-4 (5 inn.) victory over Malone on April 26, 2014.
Leading the way in game one was senior shortstop Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio), who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a triple. Freshman Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and recorded her fifth triple of the year, a G-MAC high. Also notching three RBIs for the contest was sophomore Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio), who notched a three RBI-double. Freshman Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) tallied two RBIs and a stolen base for ODU.
The game was tied 0-0 through three innings but the Panthers broke it open in the top of the fourth. With Bales at second after a single and a fielder's choice, Slider doubled to score Bales and senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) and give Ohio Dominican a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth with two outs and the bases loaded, Bales delivered with a triple to right, scoring Kline, sophomore Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) and Hackerd to increase the Panther advantage to 5-0.
After another run in the top of the sixth took the lead to 6-0 and after three runs by Walsh in the bottom of the inning cut the Cavs' deficit to 6-3, the Panthers took their offense to another level in the top of the seventh. After two-straight walks and an error loaded the bases with no outs, Sutter singled to score sophomore Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) and increase the lead to 7-3. A fielder's choice in the next at bat allowed freshman Emma Bergman (Oak Harbor, Ohio) to cross the plate and then a single to center by Hackerd later in the inning scored Sutter and Bales to increase Ohio Dominican's advantage to 10-3. A triple by Kline later in the inning scored Hackerd and freshman Aubrey Rolon (Hilliard, Ohio) to tack two more runs on for good measure, and ODU took game one by a final mark of 12-3.
Junior Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) pitched her seventh complete game of the season in the contest, going all seven innings in the circle while allowing just three hits and one earned run.
ODU rolled to a 14-0 (5 inn.) win in game two, capitalizing on four Walsh errors and notching eight hits.
Junior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) came up big for the Panthers, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Barber finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate, also pitching all five innings and allowing just four hits while striking out four. Slider finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Kline picked up her 15th stolen base of the season while also notching an RBI.
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring four runs in both the first and second innings to take an 8-0 lead through two. After a lead-off walk to start the contest put Kline on first, a single by Mix put runners on first and second for Ohio Dominican. A passed ball and walk loaded the bases for Barber, who singled to score Kline and begin the scoring. A groundout in the next at bat for Bales scored Mix, a passed ball later in the inning allowed Farmer to cross the plate, then a single to left by Slider scored Barber and powered the Panthers to an early 4-0 lead.
Ohio Dominican scored runs in each of the five innings of the contest, cruising to the 14-0 (5 inn.) win.
Winners of two-straight, the Panthers will look to carry Saturday's momentum into another road, G-MAC doubleheader in the Greater Canton area Monday, with a pair of contests with Malone scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
