COLUMBUS, Ohio — Picking up its third and fourth-straight Great Midwest Athletic Conference wins, Ohio Dominican's softball team topped Malone by final scores of 4-2 and 4-0 on Monday at Panther Field.
Leading the way for the Panthers (14-15, 4-2 G-MAC) were their starting pitchers, junior Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) and sophomore Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio). Lamping went all seven innings in the circle in game one, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out five. Barber pitched a gem for ODU in game two, notching her eighth complete game of the season while allowing no runs on just three hits and striking out three Pioneers along the way.
In game one, Ohio Dominican notched four runs on nine hits while limiting Malone to just five hits for the contest. Barber went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, recording one RBI. Also notching RBIs for the Panthers were sophomores Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) and Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio), who each recorded one hit. Senior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) recorded her 18th stolen base of 2018, while junior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) also swiped a base for the Panthers.
Barber put ODU out in front 1-0 in the top of the first, recording an RBI single to left that scored Mix and put the Panthers ahead early.
Malone scored its only runs for the day in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead, but Ohio Dominican scored runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to slowly pull away. In the top of the fourth, Slider doubled to left field to score freshman Aubrey Rolon (Hilliard, Ohio) and tie the game at 2-2. In the fifth, a throwing error allowed Kline to score and give ODU a 3-2 lead. Then in the top of the seventh, Kline led off the inning with a single, advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt by Mix and scored on an RBI single through the left side by Farmer that increased the Panther advantage to 4-2. Lamping shut the door on Malone in the bottom of the seventh, earning her fifth win of the season.
ODU once again played solid defensively in game two while using seven hits to score four runs. Seven different Panthers notched hits in the game, with Mix recording two RBIs and Barber tallying one.
With the game scoreless in the top of the second, senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) was walked and then stole second to get into scoring position. A throwing error in the next at bat by the Malone shortstop allowed Sutter to score and give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third with one out, Kline tripled to left field before a sacrifice fly by Mix scored Kline and increased the ODU advantage to 2-0.
The Panthers scored two in the fifth to push their lead to 4-0. After a double to right center by freshman Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana), a ground out by Kline pushed Hackerd to third, then an RBI single to the left side by Mix scored her from third to extend ODU's lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Barber singled through the right side to score Mix, giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead that they didn't relinquish. Barber continued her strong pitching throughout the remainder of the contest, earning the 4-0 victory for the Panthers and her sixth win in the circle in 2018.
ODU is scheduled to travel south to West Virginia this weekend for doubleheaders at Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins.
