COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's softball team swept Saginaw Valley in the home opener Friday afternoon at the Panther Softball field by final scores of 11-3 in five innings and 10-3 in game two.
The Panthers advance to 8-12 overall this season while the Cardinals drop to 5-5.
Sophomore Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) led the way for the Panthers offense with six hits, three in each game, along with five RBI's. Junior Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) had four hits on the afternoon along with four RBI's. Barber hit a home run in each game and Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) and Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) also hit homers in game two.
In game one, the Panthers jumped on the Cardinals for three runs in the first inning. Hackerd began the game with a double to left center and was brought home on a Slider single through the left side. Barber then hit her towering home run to left field that brought around Slider to make the score 3-0.
SVSU would tie the game in the third inning as they took advantage of a Panther error as two of the three runs were unearned.
ODU would blow the game open with four runs in the fourth inning as Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) singled to left scoring Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio). Later in the inning, Hackerd had her second hit of the game, singling up the middle to score Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Emma Bergman (Oak Harbor, Ohio), making the score 6-3. To complete the scoring in the inning, sophomore Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Smetzer.
The Panthers would score four times in the fifth capped by a Hackerd triple to end the game that scored Smetzer and Rayburn.
Freshman Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) allowed just one hit and no earned runs while striking out six in her five innings in the circle.
In game two, ODU once again scored first as Slider hit a rope over the left field fence making the score 1-0 .
SVSU would answer in the second with a two run homer of their own but ODU would quickly respond to regain the lead 3-2 in the third.
Slider ripped a single up the middle that scored Hackerd from second which was followed up by a Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) single that scored Bales as ODU led 3-2 after three innings.
Farmer would hit her blast to left center in the fourth making the Panther lead 4-2. The Cardinals would score once in the fifth before ODU would break out six hits and six runs in the sixth.
Barber hit her second home run of the day that scored Mix and Farmer ripped a double that scored Aubrey Rolon (Hilliard, Ohio). Rayburn would then single to left field where Farmer would score on a throwing error and Hackerd's double scored Rayburn making the score 9-3. Finishing the scoring in the inning was Bales who scored Smetzer on a single through the left side.
Barber got the win in the circle in game two throwing a complete game giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Ashland at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Panther Softball Field.
