Four First-Place Finishes Highlight Strong Showing For Track & Field At Jessica Starks Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's track & field teams earned first place finishes in four different events on Saturday at the Jessica Starks Open at Capital University.

Sophomores Bryanna Barber (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Megan Tamasovich (Canal Winchester, Ohio) each took first place for the ODU women, while seniors Justin Carroll (Berea, Ohio) and the men's 4x400 meter relay team of Carroll, sophomore Draven Bass (Circleville, Ohio), freshman Amir Metts (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Avery Sumpter (Lima, Ohio) took home top honors.

Overall, the women earned third place out of 12 competing teams with 48 points, and the men finished fifth out of 13 teams after accruing 50 points.  

Barber crossed the finish line in the women's 200 in 27.23, marking the second-fastest time of the season for the Panthers en route to her second, top two finish this season. She also recorded a fifth place finish in the women's 60 meter dash with a sprint of 8.28.

Tamasovich broke her own school record for the third time this season in the women's high jump, recording a top women's indoor jump of 1.63 meters to take first place out of nine competitors.  

For the men's squad, Carroll took home his sixth top 10 finish of the season, earning first place honors out of 35 runners in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 50.19. The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Carroll, Bass, Metts and Sumpter recorded a time of 3:26.82 to take first place out of 10 teams. It marked the second time this indoor season that the Panthers have earned top honors in the men's 4x400 meter relay.

Sumpter led the way for ODU in the men's 60 meter dash, finishing fourth with a sprint of 7.05. Setting a personal best in the men's 200 was Bass, who finished in 22.93 to take third place out of 45 runners. Also setting a personal best for the men's squad was junior Bobby Bogantz (Sunbury, Ohio), who crossed the finish line in 2:02.80 in the 800 to earn third place out of 28. Senior Chad Ellis (Brook Park, Ohio) also finished strong in the event, taking eighth place in 2:06.07. Ellis recorded another top 10 finish in the mile, earning seventh out of 33 with a run of 4:37.20. Junior Alejandro Serna (Duncanville, Texas) finished 11th out of 33 in the mile with a run of 4:40.51.

ODU's men saw several strong performances in the field, with sophomore Isaiah Smith (Logan, Ohio) taking third in the high jump at 1.89 meters. Junior Clayton Seymour (Ashville, Ohio) and Connor Cooley (London, Ohio), freshman Ben Cook (Mount Vernon, Ohio) and sophomore Ethan Vandermarliere (Georgetown, Kentucky) all set personal bests in the shot put. Seymour and Cook led the way with seventh and eighth place finishes out of 34 throwers, notching distances of 14.02 and 13.71 meters, respectively.

Sophomore Shaunqueza Stevens (Dublin, Ohio) notched a personal best in the women's 60 meter dash, finishing in sixth place with a sprint of 8.31. ODU was the only school to have two sprinters compete in the women's 60 final, with Barber and Stevens both finishing in the top seven. Stevens also finished seventh out of 35 in the women's 200 with a run of 28.02. Freshman Dominique Washington (Gahanna, Ohio) set a personal best in the 200 while finishing 12th, crossing the line in 28.02. Stevens, Barber, Washington and junior Makaylah Downour (Carroll, Ohio) were all part of the women's 4x400 meter relay team that took second out of seven in 4:27.01.

In the field for the women, freshman Zoie Fisher (West Jefferson, Ohio) set a personal best, jumping 1.43 meters in the women's high jump to take seventh place. Freshman Pasha Rivers (Dublin, Ohio) led the way for the Panthers in the shot put and weight throw. Rivers finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 10.11 meters, and earned sixth place out of 26 in the weight throw, recording a distance of 12.78 meters.

ODU will be in competition at both the Joe Banks Invitational and Division II Challenge next Saturday, February 3.
