COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After upsetting No. 21 West Liberty at home on Tuesday, Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team returns to the road as the Panthers play at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
ODU (3-0) defeated West Liberty (2-1) 73-69, marking the Panthers' first win over a ranked team since defeating NAIA No. 24 Daemen (N.Y.) on Feb. 28, 2009 in the AMC Tournament.
Trailing 69-67, ODU held West Liberty scoreless over the final 3:37 of the game. The Panthers tied the game on two Melissa Scherpenberg free throws with 1:23 left, then took the lead on a driving layup by Tori Beth Leader with 57 seconds left.
Both teams missed shots on their ensuing possessions, and ODU committed a foul with 3.8 seconds left on a three-point attempt. However, the Hilltoppers missed all three free throws, and Darian Rose grabbed the rebound and made two free throws of her own to seal the win.
Leader scored 17 points and grabbed eight boards, Scherpenberg added 15 with 11 rebounds, and Lauren Bates scored 10 with six steals.
The Panthers had a 52-31 edge in rebounding as seven players had four or more boards, led by Scherpenberg's 11. ODU also turned 19 West Liberty turnovers into 22 points and held the Hilltoppers to 9-of-31 shooting behind the arc (29.0 percent).
After pulling down 57 rebounds against Cedarville in the prior game, ODU has grabbed 50-plus rebounds in consecutive games for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
The Panthers are seeking their first 4-0 start since the 2011-12 season, when they won their first five games of the year.
