Third Quarter Push Lifts Women's Basketball Past Lakers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Kayla Cook (Westerville, Ohio) scored 11 of her 13 points during a decisive third quarter run and Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team shot 53.4 percent as the Panthers defeated Lake Superior 75-51 Thursday night in Alumni Hall.

Leading 36-30 with 7:14 left in the period, Cook poured in seven straight points for the Panthers, and junior Lindsey Blanford (Xenia, Ohio) also hit a jump shot to put ODU (9-4, 4-3 GLIAC) in front 45-30, and the lead grew to as much as 20 (55-35) at the end of the period as ODU closed the quarter on a 19-6 run.

Cook hit all four of her shots in the quarter, including a triple and a free throw, as the Panthers made 8-of-14 overall in the period (57.1 percent). ODU then grew its lead to as much as 29 during the fourth stanza.

Overall, the Panthers made 31-of-58 shots from the field, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc. The Panthers had a decisive 34-12 edge in points in the paint, and ODU's bench outscored Lake Superior (3-10, 2-5 GLIAC) 40-14. The Panthers also had a season high 24 assists and outrebounded the Lakers 38-25.

Cook's 13 points matched a career high. Blanford and sophomore Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) helped lead the bench brigade with seven points apiece, while senior Melissa Scherpenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored 12 points with eight rebounds. She also blocked three shots and had six steals, one shy of a career best.

Junior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) flirted with a triple double as she recorded nine points, seven rebounds and a career best seven assists.

The Panthers shot 66.7 percent in the first quarter and led 22-19. A 7-0 second quarter run extended the lead to 29-21 after Scherpenberg's layup with 7:46 to play, but ODU went over five minutes without a basket as the Lakers trimmed the lead to 29-27.

ODU shot 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) in the opening 20 minutes, its best field goal percentage in a half this season.

Futscher ended the drought with a layup, and a Rittinger layup and a triple by sophomore Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) sent the Panthers into the locker room with a 36-27 lead.

Ohio Dominican remains at home to host Northwood at 1 p.m. Saturday.
