Scherpenberg Recognized As CoSIDA Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas – For her accomplishments in the classroom and on the court, senior Melissa Scherpenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio) was honored as a CoSIDA Women's Basketball Third Team Academic All-American on Wednesday.

Scherpenberg is the first women's basketball student-athlete in ODU's Division II era to earn Academic All-American honors.

Off the court, she carries a 3.88 GPA and is an Early Childhood Education major. She has been named to a trio of GLIAC Academic Excellence teams and has helped the Panthers have the top GPA in the nation in two of the last three years.

On the court, Scherpenberg played a major role in helping the team compile a 20-9 record this season. She is averaging 13.4 points on 52.3 percent shooting and leads the conference with 11.1 rebounds per game. She has totaled 18 double-doubles this season, including each of the last three games where she is averaging 14.3 rebounds per game.

In her career, Scherpenberg has scored 1,161 points on 48.2 percent shooting. She currently ranks 15th on ODU's all-time scoring list and seventh on ODU's list for best field goal percentage. Scherpenberg also has 1,076 rebounds, which is 14 shy of setting ODU's rebounding record.

Scherpenberg has been named a Preseason Second Team All-GLIAC performer three times and has earned five GLIAC South Division Player of the week honors, including three this season. She is just the second player in school history to register more than 1,000 career points and rebounds.
