Defense Clamps Down Again As Women's Basketball Beats Cedarville 67-35

ASHLAND, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team used a 29-0 run to pull away from Cedarville, earning a 67-35 win Saturday night in the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover hosted by Ashland.

The Panthers (2-0) closed the second quarter with a 16-0 run, then scored the first 13 points of the third period to go in front 44-15. They held Cedarville (0-2) scoreless for a 13:55 stretch of the game and without a field goal for an 18:16 stretch.

Overall, ODU limited the Yellow Jackets to 21.8 percent shooting (12-of-55) one day after holding Alderson Broaddus to 35 points on 22.6 percent shooting.

With the score tied 15-15 early in the second quarter, senior Lindsey Blanford (Xenia, Ohio) hit a three at the top of the key to start the run. Senior Tori Beth Leader (West Portsmouth, Ohio) hit a jumper and freshman Jessica Boerger (Fort Loramie, Ohio) knocked down a three to extend the lead to 24-15 at the 6:30 mark of the period. Later in the quarter, a triple by junior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) made it 31-15, which was the halftime score.

Junior Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) sank a three early in the third to make it 36-15, and a layup by senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) and two Rose free throws made it 44-15 to cap the run.

The Panthers outscored Cedarville 39-7 over the second and third quarters and led 54-20 through three quarters.

ODU had a 51-36 rebounding advantage and scored 16 second chance points to just three for the Yellow Jackets. The Panthers also turned 23 Cedarville turnovers into 17 points.

Leader scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench, while Bates tallied 10 points with four steals. Rose finished with nine points, Boerger scored eight points with six rebounds, and junior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) grabbed a career high nine rebounds. Senior Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio) added nine rebounds and Blanford corralled eight boards.

Ohio Dominican hits the road to take on West Liberty at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. West Liberty is receiving votes in the WBCA preseason poll.
