Overly Beats Buzzer, Women's Basketball Knocks Off Walsh 70-68 In Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Alexis Overly (Chillicothe, Ohio) tipped in a missed shot as time expired to give Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team an improbable 70-68 overtime victory over Walsh Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall.

The Panthers had clawed back from a 12 point fourth quarter deficit to force the extra period and trailed 68-66 with 26 seconds left in overtime. Senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) was fouled with 4.9 seconds left and hit both shots to tie the score, and Walsh took a timeout to advance the ball into the frontcourt.

Junior Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) stole the inbounds pass and raced to the other end of the floor. Her layup attempt was challenged and missed, but Overly was there to put it back in before the clock hit zero.

The Panthers have now won six of seven games and improved to 13-6 overall (8-4 GLIAC), while Walsh fell to 9-9 (5-6 GLIAC).

ODU had taken a 46-43 lead on a transition layup from junior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) with 2:13 left in the third quarter, but the Cavaliers ripped of a 17-2 run in a three minute stretch to go on top 60-48 with 9:07 left in the fourth.

The Panthers held Walsh scoreless the remainder of the quarter, though. Senior Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio) hit a short jumper to cut the score to 60-54 with 5:22 left, and Rose followed with a lauip on the next possession to make it 60-56.

Another jump shot by Rittinger cut the deficit to 60-58 with 2:36 to play, and Rose drew a foul with 38 seconds and hit a pair of free throws to knot the game at 60.

ODU forced Walsh to miss and grabbed the rebound with 2.5 seconds left. The Panthers took a timeout and had an opportunity to win it, but a shot in the paint fell off the rim, sending it to overtime.

Walsh had a pair of three-point leads in overtime, including with 40 seconds left, but Overly knocked down a jump shot to bring the Panthers within 67-66. The Cavaliers then made one-of-two free throws at the other end with 26 seconds to play.

Rose scored a career high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Rittinger notched her third double-double in the last four games with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Lindsey Blanford (Xenia, Ohio) scored 10 points with eight rebounds, senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) collected 10 rebounds with seven points, and Overly scored eight points off the bench.

The Panthers had a 58-43 rebounding advantage to help offset 36.3 percent shooting from the field. The Cavaliers shot 39.4 percent themselves.

Ohio Dominican hits the road for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday at Hillsdale.
