Maxwell, Remmetter Log Double-Doubles In Volleyball's Five-Set Win at Rio Grande

Box Score

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit Tuesday evening to earn a 3-2, non-conference victory at Rio Grande (Ohio).

The Panthers and Red Storm, former NAIA American Mideast Conference rivals, met for the first time since 2009 Tuesday evening, with ODU winning the final three sets. The win marks ODU's second consecutive triumph in a five-set match.

Highlighting play was sophomore Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio), who topped 20 kills for the third time this fall. Remmetter led the team with 21 kills, while adding 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. The sophomore hit a team-high .356, while also recording two of the Panthers' three solo blocks.

Also registering a statistical double-double was freshman Kamryn Maxwell (Norwalk, Ohio). Maxwell logged 14 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double in 2019. Sophomore Abbi Gillson (Canton, Ohio) pitched in nine kills to help lead the Panther offense, which hit .233 for the match.

Combining for 46 of the team's 47 assists were freshman Carleigh Deitsch (St. Henry, Ohio) and sophomore Zoë Carmichael (Wooster, Ohio). Deitsch paced the Panthers with 30 helpers, while adding eight digs and two of ODU's four service aces. Senior Allie Rutter (Fostoria, Ohio) broke her career high in digs for the third time this season, finishing with 31 Tuesday evening.

Despite hitting .345 in the first set, ODU found itself on the wrong end of a 25-21 decision. The Red Storm (16-11) followed their first frame victory with another one in the second set, 25-19, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Panthers (3-21) however, kept the match alive by taking a marathon third set, 27-25. A 25-19 score in favor of the Black & Gold in the fourth set forced the match into a fifth and decisive frame. ODU had nine kills in the last set and held URG to just two kills in 14 attacks to win 15-11 and complete the comeback.

Great Midwest Athletic Conference play will resume this weekend with two matches inside Alumni Hall. ODU begins the stretch with a 7 p.m. first serve against Tiffin on Friday, Nov. 1.
