NASHVILLE – Ohio Dominican's baseball team surrendered three runs in the ninth inning and suffered a 4-1 defeat against Lewis in the final game of the Alan Smith Classic, hosted by Trevecca Nazarene.
Senior Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio) started and worked a career-best eight innings, allowing just one run on four hits while punching out six.
But the Panthers (1-2) were held hitless until the sixth inning and didn't push across their tally until the bottom of the ninth, finishing with just five hits for a second straight game.
Lewis (2-1) strung together three hits in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, and ODU didn't threaten until the sixth when junior Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) singled and stole second with two outs. He was stranded there though.
Two hit batters in the eighth gave ODU another scoring chance, but junior Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) lined out to end the inning.
After Lewis grabbed a 4-0 lead in the ninth, senior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) put ODU on the board with a two-out RBI single. The Panthers would load the bases, but a strikeout ended the rally.
Sophomore Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) had two of ODU's five hits.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, March 8 for a doubleheader against Gannon in their first action on their spring break trip to Florida.
