COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team couldn't capitalize on some early opportunities Monday and fell 8-5 to Northwood in GLIAC action from Panther Valley.
The Panthers took 2-0 and 3-1 leads early, but left seven runners on board in the opening three innings and 12 total in falling to 13-9 (3-4 GLIAC) on the season. Northwood improved to 10-9 (3-3 GLIAC).
Senior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) had an RBI single in the second and classmate Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) came in to score on a passed ball in the third to give the Panthers their 2-0 lead.
After Northwood plated an unearned run against senior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) in the fifth, ODU struck back in the bottom half of the inning as Rudolph scored on a Timberwolves error to give the Panthers that 3-1 lead.
But Northwood answered, stringing together five hits in a four-run sixth to grab its first lead of the series at 5-3.
The Panthers fought back in the seventh, bringing home two runs to tie it at five. Junior Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) singled and junior Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) lined a double to right-center to start the inning. Another Northwood error allowed Tisdale to score, and Delgado followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Jaskot and knot the score.
Northwood, though, came back with a two-strike, two-out, two-run single in the eighth to go back in front 7-5, then tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to clinch the win.
The Panthers finished with eight hits and also drew eight walks but left 11 or more runners on base for a third straight game.
The Panthers are back in action with a three-game series against Hillsdale this week, beginning with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday at Panther Valley.
