COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) hit a walkoff home run in the opener, but Ohio Dominican's baseball team couldn't complete a doubleheader sweep of Hillsdale as the Chargers rallied for a split in GLIAC action on Tuesday from Panther Valley.
Raschilla's second blast of the season lifted the Panthers to a 6-5 victory in the opener, but Hillsdale returned the favor with an RBI triple in the seventh of game two to take a 4-3 victory.
With the split, ODU is now 14-10 (4-5 GLIAC) on the season, while the Chargers stand at 8-17 (6-5 GLIAC).
In the opener, the Panthers grabbed a 4-2 lead after a three-run second inning. Junior Kyle Suminski (Fraser, Mich.) had an RBI single and senior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) had a sacrifice fly in the inning to help stake the Panthers to that lead.
Suminski's RBI fielder's choice helped extend the lead to 5-2 in the fourth, but Hillsdale rallied in the latter innings.
The Chargers scored twice in the sixth but left the bases loaded, then added the tying the run in the seventh before also stranding three on board.
With one out in the seventh, Raschilla drilled a 2-0 fastball over the wall just left of center to end it for the Panthers – his second walkoff hit in the last three days, after he delivered a game-winning single on Sunday against Northwood.
Raschilla went 2-for-3 in the opener with three knocked in, while sophomore Dylan West (Westerville, Ohio) had two hits and scored twice. Suminski had his first collegiate multi-RBI day as well, driving in two.
Junior Alberto Canales (West Park, Fla.) did not earn a decision, allowing six hits and four earned runs in 5.2 innings, while classmate Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) picked up the victory in relief.
In game two, Hillsdale strung together four hits in the third inning to grab a 3-1 lead, though the Panthers cut it to 3-2 in the bottom half on Raschilla's RBI grounder that scored Delgado.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth, when senior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) doubled to left to start the inning, then came in to score as freshman Jimmy Gravett (Grove City, Ohio) delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.
But Hillsdale answered with two outs in the top of the seventh, as an RBI triple to straightaway center field gave the Chargers a 4-3 lead, and ODU went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Rudolph and Gravett each had two hits to lead the Panther offense in game two, while junior Ryan Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.) went the distance but suffered the loss after allowing the four runs and nine hits.
Ohio Dominican and Hillsdale conclude their three-game series with a nine-inning contest at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Panther Valley.
