YPSILANTI, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's baseball team had a 3-0 lead in game two of its Sunday GLIAC doubleheader against No. 17 Grand Valley but ultimately fell 9-4. The Panthers also dropped a 2-0 decision in the opener.
ODU scored on a Laker error, a sacrifice fly by junior Kyle Suminski (Fraser, Mich.) and an infield single by senior Drew Ryan (Newark, Ohio) which brought home classmate Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) to take the three run advantage in the second inning of the nightcap.
But GVSU answered with two runs in the third, four in the fourth and another tally in the fifth to go in front 7-3.
The Panthers cut it to 7-4 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jaskot, which scored senior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio), but ODU stranded two runners on board to end the inning and the Lakers tacked on two runs in the bottom half.
Senior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) had two of ODU's four hits in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Panthers received a strong start from senior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) but managed just three hits in suffering the 2-0 loss.
Blackburn went six innings and allowed just six hits and the two runs. He threw just 78 pitches in his second complete game outing of the spring.
Grand Valley reached him for two runs on a pair of RBI singles in the third inning, though, and the Panthers left the bases loaded in both the fourth and sixth innings to suffer the defeat.
The Panthers dropped to 15-13 and 5-8 in the GLIAC after dropping the three-game series to Grand Valley (19-7, 10-2).
ODU remains on the road for a 2 p.m. game Tuesday at Lake Erie.
