TIFFIN, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team split a Saturday GLIAC doubleheader with Tiffin, earning an 8-2 win in game one before suffering a 7-2 setback in the finale.
The game two loss meant that ODU was mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the GLIAC Tournament for a second straight year, as the Panthers fell to 25-22 (14-17 GLIAC). Tiffin is now 17-30 (16-14 GLIAC).
The Panthers tallied 11 hits in the opener, including a 3-for-4 performance from junior Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio). Senior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) had two hits, including a two-run homer, and senior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) and junior Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) each had two hits.
ODU scored four times in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead, with RBI basehits from senior Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Schluessler, Tisdale and Raschilla providing the spark.
Rudolph's triple to start the third led to a sacrifice fly from Jaskot to make it 6-1, and Raschilla's two-run shot to left – his third of the spring – made it 8-1.
That was more than enough for senior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio), who went the distance in what was likely his final collegiate outing. Blackburn allowed just six hits and the two runs in improving to 4-3 on the season. He completed four of his eight starts and lowered his ERA to 2.79.
In game two, ODU fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but recovered to tie at 2-2 in the third. Senior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) had a double down the left field line to score Jaskot, and Schluessler had an RBI grounder that brought in Delgado to tie the game.
But the Dragons answered with a run in the fourth to retake the lead at 3-2, and after the Panthers stranded two runners in the sixth, Tiffin put the game away with a four-run sixth inning.
ODU tallied four hits in the nightcap and also committed two errors.
Ohio Dominican will conclude its season at noon on Sunday with a nine inning contest with Tiffin.
