COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team threatened No. 13 Mercyhurst in the latter innings but could not push any runs across as the Panthers fell 6-0 to the visiting Lakers on a rainy Monday at Panther Valley.
Trailing 4-0 in the sixth, ODU (4-1) put two runners on as senior Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio) and junior Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) started the inning with singles. However, a double play grounder and another groundout ended the threat.
Mercyhurst (8-1) added to its lead with a two-run homer in the seventh, but ODU did not go quietly. The Panthers loaded the bases in the seventh inning with two outs, but a fielder's choice grounder ended that rally. ODU had the bases loaded again in the eighth, but once more failed to score.
The Panthers finished with eight hits and drew four walks, but left 10 runners on base in suffering their first setback in 2017.
Evans and sophomore Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two hits apiece to lead the Panthers, while junior Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) and senior Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) each had a hit and a walk.
The Lakers took advantage of an ODU error in the second inning to score three runs – two of which were unearned – and Mercyhurst extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning.
Ohio Dominican returns to action with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11 as the Panthers will take on Notre Dame College in Auburndale, Fla. to kick off the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational.
