COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team suffered an 85-82 loss against No. 19 Ashland Sunday afternoon in non-conference action in Alumni Hall.
Senior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) led the way for the Panthers pouring in 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds on the afternoon. Junior Michael Scott (Hebron, Ky.) set a career-high 22 points on his 10-of-14 shooting while also dishing out four assists to lead the Panthers.
The Panthers (1-1) jumped on the Eagles early in the contest opening a 16-point lead at 24-8 with 13:01 remaining in the first half. ODU opened the half shooting 9-of-11 including 6-of-7 from behind the arc capped off with a pair of threes from redshirt freshman Ethan Haynes (Florence, Ky.). Haynes finished the contest with 11 points and seven rebounds to lead the Panther bench.
Ashland (2-0) would answer going on a 14-0 run in the next three minutes to cut their deficit to two at 24-22 with 10:07 remaining in the half. ODU would regain momentum with a 7-0 spurt to open their lead back to nine at 31-22 capped with a Hickey three with 7:33 remaining in the half.
At the under four media timeout, ODU held a 38-30 lead before Ashland closed the half with a 11-3 run to send the teams to the locker room with the Panthers clinging to a 42-41 lead.
Throughout the half, Ashland never led and each team converted on 15 shots with ODU shooting 46.9% and the Eagles shooting 50%.
After Ashland tied the game early in the half, ODU would once again advance their lead holding a six point edge at 57-51 after another Hickey three. Ashland would eventually tie the game once again at 60-60 before taking their first lead of the game at 62-60 with 10:55 remaining in the half.
After a Matt King (Mason, Ohio) jumper tied the game at 74-74, Ashland would open their largest lead of the contest at 82-76 with 3:28 remaining in the contest.
With ODU down just two at 82-80, the Panthers called a timeout and came out designing an alley-oop to Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) from Scott to tie the game once again with 1:17 remaining.
Ashland would regain their two point edge the next possession and with four seconds remaining, a Haynes three went begging from the corner and the Eagles were able to hold on.
Throughout the contest, the game was tied 10 times with five lead changes. ODU finished the contest shooting 48.5% (32-of-66) including 34.6% (9-for-26) from distance with the Eagles shooting 55.4% (31-of-56) and 38.9% (7-for-18) from three.
The Panthers will have the midweek off before traveling to Pitt-Johnstown Saturday, November 16 with tip set for 3 p.m.
