Panthers Head to Southern Indiana for Two-Day Tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Ohio Dominican softball team heads to the University of Southern Indiana Spring Tournament for the second straight season this weekend, playing four games in two days.

Saturday, Feb. 22
Ohio Dominican vs. Missouri S & T, 11:00 am CST
Ohio Dominican vs. Southern Indiana, 1:00 pm CST

Sunday, Feb. 23
Ohio Dominican vs. Missouri S & T, 10:00 am CST
Ohio Dominican vs. Illinois – Springfield, 2:00 pm CST

Ohio Dominican Panthers

  • This is the second time ODU has played in the USI Spring Tournament where the Panthers hold a 1-2 record against tournament opponents during that span.
  • The Panthers went 1-5 in their season-opening weekend at the University of Alabama at Huntsville Ringor Charger Chillout Tournament.
  • The USI Tournament is the second of three for the Panthers before Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play begins on March 22.
  • The Ohio Dominican softball team is in its 30th year of existence.
  • Head coach Marcella Vanlandingham is in her 19th season with the team and holds a 539-424-1 record.
  • ODU returns 14 letterwinners (two pitchers) from last year, six of which have seen time as a starter, joined on the roster by six newcomers.

Scout Team

Missouri S & T (0-0; 0-0 GLVC)

  • Led by eighth year head coach Don Kennedy.
  • Finished 13-25 (12-20 GLVC) in 2013.
  • Picked to finish sixth in GLVC West Preseason Poll.

Southern Indiana (3-1; 0-0 GLVC)

  • Led by 13th year head coach Sue Kunkle (330-269-1 at USI).
  • Went 30-22 (17-15 GLVC) last season.
  • Went to the NCAA II Tournament for the fourth time in the program's history.
  • Picked to finish fourth in the GLVC East Preseason Poll.

Illinois- Springfield (4-2; 0-0 GLVC)

  • Led by fifth year head coach Matt Mundell.
  • Finished 2013 season with an overall record of 21-28 (15-19 GLVC)
  • Chelsea Minor returns for her third year behind the plate as a Prairie Star. Minor led Illinois Springfield in batting average (.355), runs (36), hits (55), doubles (12), triples (4) and total bases (93) last season.
