COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Dominican softball team will look to stay perfect in conference play this week as they host three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams for six contests. The Panthers (14-20, 10-0 GLIAC) continue to play well during conference action and will look to continue to hold their first place position after this week.
On Wednesday the Panthers will host Tiffin for two games starting at 3:00p.m. ODU will then host Lake Erie and Walsh this weekend with the Lake Erie games starting at 1:00p.m. on Saturday and the Walsh games beginning at 12:00p.m. on Sunday.
Ohio Dominican went 4-2 last week with the losses coming to the University of Indianapolis in non-conference matchups. The Panthers went on to beat Saginaw Valley 12-2 and 6-1, before finishing off the week with two wins against nationally ranked Wayne State, 3-0 and 3-0.
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, TX) had a very nice week in the pitcher's circle for the Panthers. Stanzel went 3-1 last week giving up only four runs in 27 innings pitched, including two complete game shutout wins over Wayne State. She gave up only five hits in the two games against the Warriors and took a perfect game into the fourth inning in both games.
Freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, OH) had a strong week going 8-for-19 from the plate with a home run and a double, while driving in six runs. Hinton is now batting .326 on the season and is tied for the team high with 19 RBI. Hinton also leads the GLIAC with 18 hits in conference play.
Junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, OH) also had a nice week recording seven hits, two doubles, and one home run last week. Thomas is now batting .392 on the season and has driven in 18 runs, and leads the team with four home runs, which is fifth best in the conference.
Tiffin comes into the week with a 15-10 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the GLIAC. Tiffin split with Wayne State last Saturday before losing two games to Saginaw Valley on Sunday. ODU won both meetings between the two teams last season by the scores of 5-1 and 2-1. The Dragons have seven batters with an average of .300 or better and are led by Jena King who is batting .431. Taylor Spang leads the pitching staff for Tiffin with a 6-2 record and a 2.21 ERA.
Lake Erie (3-18, 0-10 GLIAC) comes into the week on a 10 game losing streak. Last season the Panthers won both games against the Storm by the scores of 5-1 and 10-2. Kate-Lynn Urgo leads the charge offensively for the Storm with a .352 batting average. Darrian Yanek is batting .268 but leads the team with 14 RBI's and two home runs.
Walsh (18-11, 8-4 GLIAC) comes into the week winning seven of their last eight games. Last weekend the Cavaliers split at Northwood before sweeping Lake Superior State at home. Last season ODU won games, 7-1 and 4-0, against Walsh. The Cavaliers have four batters with an average of .300 or better with Jenna Head leading the team with a .391 average. Chelsy Testa is batting .378 and leads the team with 12 doubles and two home runs, while recording 12 RBI's. She also leads the team in steals with six. Casi Rohr leads the pitching staff for Walsh with a 10-7 record. Rohr has 13 complete games and a 1.72 ERA. She has also recorded 122 strikeouts in 106.0 innings pitched.
