HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Ohio Dominican's softball team defeated Miles by a final score of 16-5 before falling 4-3 to Truman State on Thursday at the Charger Chillout 2.0 to begin the 2018 season.
ODU recorded 17 hits in its 16-5 win over Miles to start the day, marking the most hits in a game for Ohio Dominican since a 20-4 win over Malone on April 26, 2014. Senior shortstop Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) led Ohio Dominican with three RBIs on 4-for-5 at the plate while also stealing one base. Sophomore Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) went a perfect 4-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs in her first game as a Panther, while seniors Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) and Jordan Nichols (Peotone, Illinois) each went 2-for-4.
Ohio Dominican (1-1) started fast with five runs in the first inning to charge out to a 5-0 lead. After singles by Kline and Sutter and steals by the pair, sophomore Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) singled to score Kline and put the Panthers on the board, 1-0.
An RBI single by sophomore Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) scored Sutter and advanced Farmer to third, and then a triple in the next at bat by Bales scored Farmer and Slider to extend the ODU advantage to 4-0. Junior Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) scored Bales on a sacrifice fly in the next at bat, and ODU took a 5-0 lead through one.
Miles scored two in the bottom of the first to cut its deficit to 5-2, but three more runs for the Panthers in the top of the second pushed the Ohio Dominican lead to 8-2. Rayburn led off the inning with a triple, then an RBI single by Kline scored Rayburn to make it 6-2, ODU. Later in the inning, Slider reached first following a dropped fly ball, which allowed Kline and junior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) to score and increase the Panther lead to 8-2.
Ohio Dominican scored two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take an 11-5 lead into the top of the seventh, where the Panthers put the game out of reach with five, seventh-inning runs, sealing the win by a final score of 16-5. Senior pitcher Bailey Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) went four innings in the circle to earn the win and Farmer pitched three scoreless innings in relief.
In game two of the day, Ohio Dominican fell 4-3 to Truman. Junior pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) started the contest and limited Truman to just one run in six innings while striking out six. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Kline reached first on a throwing error and stole second to lead off the inning. A wild pitch allowed Kline to advance to third, then a fielder's choice induced by Sutter allowed Kline to score and tie the game at 1-1. Sutter stole second, and then Farmer doubled down the left field line to score Sutter and give Ohio Dominican a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, when a single down the left field line by Sutter scored Simmonds and allowed ODU to take a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh. But Truman, which won 40 games in 2017 and was picked third in the GLVC preseason coaches poll, scored three runs in the top of the seventh and prevented a Panther rally in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 4-3 win.
ODU faces Alabama-Huntsville tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST/12 p.m. CST and Shorter at 5 p.m. EST/4 p.m. CST.
