Two More Wins: Softball Sweeps Kentucky Wesleyan To Extend Win Streak To 14 Games

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It was another doubleheader sweep, the seventh-straight for Ohio Dominican's softball team, which defeated Kentucky Wesleyan by final scores of 5-3 and 7-3 on Friday afternoon at Panther Field.

ODU (24-15, 10-2 G-MAC) has now earned victories in its last 14 games to match the program's longest win streak since the 2003 season. At 12-0 in the month of April, Ohio Dominican is the hottest team in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and has defeated its last seven opponents by a combined margin of 111-15.

In game one, ODU used six hits to score five runs while holding Kentucky Wesleyan (18-17, 6-8 G-MAC) to three runs on nine hits.

Junior pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) earned the win in the circle, picking up her 12th complete game and 10th victory of 2018. She gave up two earned runs and struck out two.

The Panthers were led at the plate by sophomore Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio), who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and hit her third home run of the season. Sophomore Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) also went 2-for-3. Freshman Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) tallied an RBI, while senior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) and junior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) each recorded hits for Ohio Dominican.

Kentucky Wesleyan scored the first run of the contest in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. But in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) on third, Rayburn sent a laser to left field, which sailed over the fence for the two-run home run and a 2-1 lead for Ohio Dominican.

KWC scored runs in the top of the fifth and sixth to re-take the lead, but it was ODU that scored the final three runs of the contest. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Rayburn once again came up with a piece of timely hitting, singling through the left side to score Sutter and freshman Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) to give Ohio Dominican a 4-3 lead. A groundout from Hackerd allowed Rayburn to score and increase the advantage to 5-3. Lamping closed the contest for the 13th ODU win in a row.

The 14th-straight victory for Ohio Dominican came by way of a 7-3 decision in game two. Kline, Mix, Farmer and Sutter all recorded two hits apiece, with Mix and Farmer each recording two RBIs. Sophomore Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) and Hackerd also picked up RBIs in the win. Sophomore Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) picked up her 11th win in the circle, going all seven innings and striking out five.

Two home runs for Kentucky Wesleyan in the top of the third put ODU in a 2-0 hole, but Ohio Dominican scored seven unanswered to take a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, Kline tripled for the eighth time this season, then a single by Mix scored her from third to make it 2-1 KWC. One batter later, Farmer sent her sixth long ball of the season over the fence in left center, two RBI, and Ohio Dominican regained a 3-2 lead.

ODU scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead into the top of the seventh. Kentucky Wesleyan scored one run to make it 7-3 and had runners on second and third with two outs, but Barber struck out the final KWC batter to end the game.

Ohio Dominican takes a 14-game win streak into a doubleheader with Trevecca Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at Panther Field.
