COLUMBUS, Ohio — A week off from game action didn't slow down Ohio Dominican's softball team on Saturday at Panther Field, which swept Ursuline by final scores of 10-2 (5 innings) and 4-2 to extend its program-record win streak to 18-straight.
The Panthers (28-15, 14-2 G-MAC) are an unblemished 16-0 in the month of April and have swept their last nine doubleheaders. ODU has now outscored the opposition 133-25 over the course of the win streak and hasn't allowed more than four runs in a single game since March 19. The squad entered the day with the second-longest win streak in NCAA Division II, and with 28 wins for the season, the Panthers earn their highest win total in a single year since 2014.
In game one, Ohio Dominican scored 10 runs on 13 hits and recorded a season-high in stolen bases with eight for the game. Senior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) stole three bases in game one and one in game two, and now with 139 for her career, needs just three more steals to break the school record for stolen bases in a career. Freshman Aubrey Rolon (Hilliard, Ohio) recorded a career-high two stolen bases in the contest, while sophomore Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio), senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) and freshman Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) each stole one base for ODU.
Junior Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) earned her 12th win of the season in the circle, notching her 14th complete game of 2018 while striking out four.
Farmer and sophomore Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) each went 2-for-3 in game one with three RBIs. Sophomore Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Hackerd went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Ohio Dominican scored early, as Kline crossed the plate after an RBI single by Farmer to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Ursuline scored one in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1, but ODU re-took the lead in the bottom of the third after a groundout by Farmer scored Hackerd to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ohio Dominican broke the game open with six runs. With the bases loaded, Rayburn hit a long fly ball to center field for a two-RBI double that scored Sutter and freshman Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) to extend the lead to 4-1. An error by Ursuline in the next at bat allowed three Panther runs to cross the plate, then an RBI single to center by Farmer later in the inning scored Kline to give Ohio Dominican a commanding 8-1 lead.
A solo home run by Ursuline's Hannah Trent in the top of the fifth cut the Arrows' deficit to 8-2, but two more runs for Ohio Dominican in the bottom of the fifth sealed the 17th-straight win for the squad by a final mark of 10-2 (5 inn.).
ODU earned a 4-2 win in game two to record its 18th-consecutive victory. Sophomore Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) won her 13th game of the season in the circle, striking out nine in her 13th complete game of 2018. She also recorded one hit for the contest, along with Slider and Hackerd, who each notched one RBI apiece.
Ursuline got on the board first in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Panthers responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After Sutter was walked, Slider singled up the middle to score the senior and tie the game at 1-1. An Arrow error allowed Slider to score, then an RBI single by Hackerd scored Rayburn to give ODU a 3-1 lead through two. Ursuline cut its deficit to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fourth, but another error in the bottom of the fifth allowed Kline to score, which made it 4-2 Ohio Dominican.
In the top of the seventh, Barber struck out two of the three Ursuline batters to earn the 18th win in a row for Ohio Dominican.
The Panthers host Lake Erie on Sunday starting at 12 p.m. on Friends of Jaclyn Day at Panther Field.
