COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's softball team earned a two-game sweep of Ohio Valley by final scores of 8-0 (6 innings) and 9-1 (5 innings) on Wednesday afternoon at Panther Field, and senior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) set the program mark for most career stolen bases.
Kline stole one base in game one to tie the program record held by Tabitha Furlong at 141 career steals, and then another steal in game two pushed Kline to the all-time program mark of 142. She's stolen 36 bases just this year and needs just six more to set her career-high for stolen bases in a season.
In game one, ODU scored eight runs on 11 hits while holding the Fighting Scots to just five hits in its seventh shutout in the last 22 games.
Junior Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) continued her strong play in the circle, recording her 11th-consecutive win and second-straight shutout. At the plate, sophomore Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) hit two home runs in the game and hit a third long ball for the day in game two, now boasting eight for the year. Kline went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Junior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) notched two RBIs, while sophomores Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) both finished with one RBI apiece for the Panthers.
ODU scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. A sac fly by Mix scored Kline after she led off with her G-MAC leading 10th triple of the season, then Barber sent a blast to right center to give Ohio Dominican a 2-0 lead.
Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the third, it was déjà vu for the Ohio Valley defense. Mix scored Kline on another sac fly, and in the next at bat, Barber homered to make it 5-0 Panthers.
With a 5-0 advantage in the bottom of the sixth, Slider doubled to left to score senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) and push the lead to 6-0. A bunt for a single by Rayburn scored Slider to make it 7-0, and an RBI single by Kline scored Rayburn to seal the 8-0 win for Ohio Dominican.
In game two, the Panthers scored nine runs on 13 hits while holding the Fighting Scots to just four hits for the contest. Barber earned her 14th win in the circle, recording five strikeouts along the way. She also went 1-for-2 in the contest with an RBI and drew a walk. Kline went 2-for-4 at the plate and now boasts 10 multi-hit games in the month of April. Freshman Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) and Slider each went 3-for-3 in the game, combining for five RBIs.
ODU got off to a quick start in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. RBI singles by Mix, Bales and Slider put the Panthers in front 3-0 through one.
Leading 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Ohio Dominican scored four runs to end the contest. Bales started the inning with a single up the middle. After a fielding error in Sutter's at bat and a double steal put runners on second and third, Slider delivered with a two-RBI single to make it 7-1 Panthers. An RBI double to left by Rayburn in the next at bat scored Slider, and after a bunt for a single by Kline pushed Rayburn to third, she scored on a wild pitch to end the game, 9-1 (5 innings).
Ohio Dominican will get set for a big weekend at home with Hillsdale on Saturday and Findlay on Sunday.
