ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Ohio Dominican women's soccer team upset defending national champions and nationally ranked No. 3 Grand Valley State on the road by a final score of 1-0.
The Panthers (9-3-1, 6-1-1 GLIAC) have now won four straight matches. With the loss, GVSU's (12-2-0, 7-1-0 GLIAC) nine match win streak comes to an end.
ODU broke many Laker streaks with the win including GVSU's 69 match home unbeaten streak, which was fifth best in any NCAA Division all-time. The Lakers had also won their past 30 GLIAC matches coming into tonight, ranking sixth all-time in NCAA Division II.
The goal scored by senior Jordan Mazzi (Galena, OH) was the first goal ODU has scored against GVSU in their now five games all-time.
On a rainy night in Allendale, both teams played to a scoreless draw in the first 45 minutes with the Lakers holding a 9-1 shot advantage, and a 2-1 edge on shots on goal.
In the 58th minute Mazzi scored off a rebounded shot by junior Lauren Pratt (West Chester, OH).
After the Panther goal, ODU played well defensively as they were outshot 9-1 from the 58th minute on.
Senior Laura Clark (Lapeer, MI) recorded her first shutout of the season. Clark now holds sole possession of all-time records at ODU in shutouts (20) and goals against average (0.77). Clark also tied the career record for games played with 57 and her 27 career wins is just two behind Krissi Sparks for most all-time.
Overall, ODU was outshout by the Lakers 19-5, but the Panthers held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Mazzi and freshman Ashley Blake (Hilliard, OH) each led the Panthers with two shots. Pratt logged the fifth shot for ODU.
Mazzi is now seventh all-time in career goals at ODU with 18. She also ranks 10th in ODU history with 35 career points.
The Panthers will look to continue upon the winning path at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. ODU will travel to Canton, Ohio to take on the Malone Pioneers.
