COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's women's soccer team handed Walsh its first loss of the 2017 season by a final tally of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Panther Stadium.
The Cavaliers (10-1-0, 7-1-0 G-MAC) had allowed just three goals this year, but the Panthers blitzed the Walsh defense with two goals in the first 10 minutes.
ODU (9-3-1, 7-1-1 G-MAC) outshot the Cavs 21-12 and held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal over Walsh. Freshman Samantha Buck (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) scored her third goal of the season in the win, leading the Panthers in shots (five) and shots on goal (three). Sophomore Madeline Reimbold (Fort Wayne, Indiana) scored the game winning goal with her first score of the year. Senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) and sophomore Becca Gordon (Johnstown, Ohio) each notched assists in the win for ODU.
The first 10 minutes of the match began with a flurry of scoring. In the fifth minute, Bates headed the ball to Gordon, who pushed it ahead to Buck. The freshman took the pass near midfield and raced ahead of the Walsh defense with the ball, putting a shot past Cavs keeper Mickey McClanahan to give Ohio Dominican an early 1-0 advantage.
Walsh evened the match at 1-1 in the seventh minute, but Ohio Dominican's aggressive attack led to another goal in the 10th minute for the Panthers. After a failed clear attempt by the Walsh defense, Reimbold came sprinting to the close left portion of the box and headed the ball to the back of the net, giving ODU a 2-1 lead.
The Panther defense held Walsh to just two more shots on goal for the remainder of the match and picked up a crucial, 2-1 conference victory.
The win gives Ohio Dominican 22 conference points compared to 21 points for Walsh, moving the Panthers into second place in the Great Midwest standings.
Ohio Dominican hits the road for two conference matchups next week and will play Ursuline on Wednesday, October 11 and Lake Erie on Saturday, October 14.
