Rally Falls Short As Volleyball Drops G-MAC Opener

PHILLIPI, W. Va. – Trailing 2-0 to start G-MAC play at Alderson Broaddus, Ohio Dominican's volleyball team forced a fifth set and had a 13-12 lead, but couldn't finish off the rally as the Panthers fell 15-13 in the final frame Friday evening.

After losing the first set 25-23 and the second 25-14, ODU took the third set at 25-17 and the fourth at 25-22 before falling in the end.

ODU racked up 59 kills in the match, but committed 35 hitting errors and allowed AB to hit .283 in the contest.

Senior Rebecca Skidmore (Westerville, Ohio) had 15 kills and hit .417 while freshman Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) added 14 terminations. Sophomore Alexis Young (Gahanna, Ohio) finished with 12 kills, sophomore Ashton Barr (New Castle, Ind.) led all players with 29 assists, and freshman Tate Rybarczyk (Avon Lake, Ohio) posted a match-high 13 digs.

Leading 9-8 in the third set, ODU ripped off seven straight points, highlighted by a trio of Skidmore aces, to pull away from the Battlers.

The fourth set was knotted up at 12-12 before another 7-0 Panther run put the visitors in the lead for good. Young racked up five kills during that stretch, and ODU survived a late charge by AB as the hosts climbed within 23-22 before a block by seniors Patricia Barreto (Findlay, Ohio) and Kelly Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio) and another Young kill ended the threat.

ODU (2-7, 0-1 G-MAC) found itself trailing 8-5 in the fifth set, but kills by Barr and Barreto pushed the Panthers in the lead at 13-12. However, AB (4-4, 1-1 G-MAC) tallied the last three points to take the match.

Ohio Dominican remains on the road for a 1 p.m. match at Ohio Valley on Saturday.
